Seth Timbs Caricature
To create a caricature of Nashville, TN musician Seth Timbs I studied quite a few photos from several angles.
Despite the fact that Seth’s hairstyle and facial hair changes frequently, I decided to create the caricature with shorter hair and no facial hair.
I came up with several sketches of Seth for the caricature but eventually settled on and developed the one on the right because I thought it looked like something from MAD Magazine, which was where I wanted to go with the style. Kind of a Mort Drucker/Tom Richmond look.
The pencil sketch of Seth features an old upright piano complete with candelabra and tip jar. With a little tightening up the sketch will be ready for inking.
All inking has now been completed, pencil lines erased and the piece is ready to be scanned and colored in Photoshop.
In Photoshop I create the background colors first. I want the background very simple to not distract from the main caricature.
Here is the final caricature of Seth Timbs. Unfortunately I saved the airbrushing layer on top of the flat color so I’m not able to show that step here but I did color the entire illustration with flat colors first and then applied the shadows and highlights later. The final result is a caricature that would look perfect on t-shirts, posters or even an album cover.
