Robert Downey Jr. Caricature

Digital painting caricature of Robert Downey Jr. I may pull this one back out in the future. Lot more stuff I’d kind of like to do with it. Come back again later…

Ashton Kutcher Caricature

May 14, 2011 | 0 comments

This week it was announced that Ashton Kutcher will replace Charlie Sheen on the CBS television show “Two And A Half Men.” I have to admit that I’ve never seen an entire episode of “2.5 Men” but I loved “That 70s Show” and thought Mr. Kutcher to be a mighty fine comic actor. So to congratulate him in his new role and wish him luck I have rendered him in caricature.

Fred #2

This is a second Fred leBlanc caricature. Totally different style than the first one. I wanted to keep the painting style loose and rough.

Caricature of Cowboy Mouth’s Fred LeBlanc

May 5, 2011 | 0 comments

It’s Jazz Fest in New Orleans and what better way to recognize it than with a caricature of a guy from my favorite New Orleans’ band Cowboy Mouth, Mr. Fred LeBlanc. I did several sketches of Fred in preparation for this caricature so I may eventually post another caricature in a totally different style. In the meantime you can enjoy this one and celebrate the fact that it’s great to be alive! Are you with me??

A few caricature sketches of President Barack Obama. Can’t remember what I created these for but they were fun.

Seth Timbs Caricature

Apr 20, 2011 | 0 comments

To create a caricature of Nashville, TN musician Seth Timbs I studied quite a few photos from several angles.

Despite the fact that Seth’s hairstyle and facial hair changes frequently, I decided to create the caricature with shorter hair and no facial hair.

I came up with several sketches of Seth for the caricature but eventually settled on and developed the one on the right because I thought it looked like something from MAD Magazine, which was where I wanted to go with the style. Kind of a Mort Drucker/Tom Richmond look.

The pencil sketch of Seth features an old upright piano complete with candelabra and tip jar. With a little tightening up the sketch will be ready for inking.

All inking has now been completed, pencil lines erased and the piece is ready to be scanned and colored in Photoshop.

In Photoshop I create the background colors first. I want the background very simple to not distract from the main caricature.

Here is the final caricature of Seth Timbs. Unfortunately I saved the airbrushing layer on top of the flat color so I’m not able to show that step here but I did color the entire illustration with flat colors first and then applied the shadows and highlights later. The final result is a caricature that would look perfect on t-shirts, posters or even an album cover.

Max Gerskin Illustration

Apr 20, 2011 | 0 comments

In 2006 when Chattanooga Pulse writer Max Gerskin wrote a humorous story about ridding his neighborhood of stray cats, he was taken seriously by the Chattanooga Police and promptly investigated. I was asked to do a cover illustration of Max for the in-depth scoop The Pulse ran about the issue (some details about the incident can be found here). I am reprinting the illustration because I always kind of liked it and I now feel ready to publicly admit the body I drew is 100% based upon mine.

Freddie Mercury Photoshop Caricature

Apr 18, 2011 | 0 comments

This is my first attempt at creating a caricature using nothing but Adobe Photoshop filters and features. Although I prefer the traditional way of exaggerating and distorting by hand-drawn methods, this is the direction caricature illustration seems to be going. While I can see myself exploring this method in much more depth, I think my use for it will probably be as a foundation or reference for the beginning caricature drawing or painting. Then again, maybe I’ll grow to love it enough to make it my specialty. Let’s find out.
