I launched Clown School Cockroaches in 2014 as a web comic with no intention of ever going to print, working with an editor (not my best decision), or following any rules. My goal was to create something that fully embraced anarchy, filth, and chaos—the kind of mayhem you’d expect from a comic strip about cockroaches.
The story revolves around four cockroaches currently enrolled in clown school. They despise humans, human rules, and most of the human world. Yet, despite their contempt, they love to entertain—because, well, they’re clowns. In the early days, I drew a couple dozen strips while searching for a style, tone, and characters I truly enjoyed. Ironically, I feel like I finally started finding the strip’s voice just as I stopped drawing it.
I’m particularly fond of the black-and-white artwork with color reserved only for their clown noses. I also like how the characters evolved in the later strips—thinner, sketchier, and less charming, in the best way possible.
At some point, I’d love to pick up the strip again, but who knows? Time flies, and there are so many things to do. None of us are getting any younger.
